A school like no other in the world

A school like no other in the world

Green School in Bali emerged from a desire to rethink the conventional approaches to teaching children and incorporate extensive ecological awareness training into the curriculum. This has made it a model for future education.

Founded in 2008, this pioneering school—with structures and furniture made entirely out of bamboo—strives to empower its 300 pupils to protect the extraordinary environment in which they evolve, day after day. Guided by a teaching staff with in-depth knowledge of ecology, the children get first-hand experience with sustainability, growing organic fruits and vegetables or creating animal and fish reserves. At the same time, classroom sessions and artistic activities encourage them to think about how they can help safeguard our planet.

The Akuo Foundation joined in this exciting effort with a novel research project designed to give the Green School energy self-sufficiency through the use of renewable energy sources. Drawing on our expertise in eco-designed photovoltaic solutions, our engineers devised a made-to-order project. Not only did they help design the electrical installations; they also innovated with photovoltaic modules mounted on bamboo structures. In addition, a small hydroelectric facility provides backup to the solar power unit.

The Foundation therefore takes particular pride in its contribution to the greenest school on earth.
